Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

RPL is a process that acknowledges the skills and knowledge aquired by individuals through previous TESOL study or English teaching experience. If you've taught English as a Second Language (ESL) before or you have existing qualifications in TESOL, then you may be eligible for full or partial Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
We offer RPL as a streamlined pathway that can make your journey towards a TESOL qualification faster and more affordable. The amount of RPL you can get will depend on your existing qualifications, years of general teaching experience, and years of ESL (English as a Second Language) teaching experience.

WHAT SORT OF EVIDENCE DO I NEED?
The evidence you will need to provide will depend on the unit of competency. Usually a combination of evidence will be used to show your competency in the qualification requirements.

RPL can only be given to a person where they have evidence that is:

- Past Studies
- copies of qualifications you have received and academic transcripts showing exact subjects or topics
- actual work you completed for past studies (e.g. essays or assignments)
- Workplace Documents produced by you (in paid or voluntary capacity)
- English lesson plans and / or training programs
- Learning materials you have developed or worked with
- English assessment tools you have developed or worked with
- Audio/Video Recordings
- E.g. of you teaching or assessing ESL lessons (online or in person)
- Third Party Reports
- References from your employers
- Teaching schedules or agreements showing employment as an English teacher (ESL / EAL / EFL, etc).
- Supervisors' reports
- Student testimonials
- Peer or colleague testimonials
- Any Other Evidence
- E.g. documents from TESOL related workshops, seminars and conferences

RPL can only be given to a person where they have evidence that is:
- Valid - the evidence represents and matches the unit's requirements
- Sufficient - the evidence is enough to show that you are competent in all of the requirements of the unit
- Authentic - it can be verified that the evidence you have submitted is genuinely your own work, qualifications, experience, etc.
- Current - the evidence shows your current ability and how it meets current industry standards
HOW MUCH RPL CAN I APPLY FOR?
You can claim RPL for as many units as you can provide evidence for. If you submit appropriate evidence for all of the units, and an assessor deems that the evidence does show you are competent, then RPL can be granted for the full course or qualification.
If you are not able to receive full RPL, you will be advised of what gap training and assessment is needed in order for you to receive the full qualification.

HOW LONG DOES THE RPL PROCESS TAKE?
Generally, the length of time that the RPL process will take depends on:
RPL applications can take up to 4 weeks to be assessed and finalised. During this time we will conduct a thorough review of documentation and evidence against the course and unit criteria. We will also verify the authenticity of the documents you provide to us, including conducting phone interviews with any referees.
The more thoroughly you complete the relevant sections of the RPL Guide, and the more clearly you link the evidence to the relevant Units, the quicker the process.

- how much work is involved for the assessor to communicate the findings to you and gather further information (if required)

CAN I FIND OUT HOW MUCH CREDIT I CAN GET BEFORE I ENROL?
The best way to find out how much RPL you can potentially receive is to read through the RPL Guide (available at the bottom of this page) and have a look at the examples of evidence section and the 'Evidence of the following to be collected' column for each unit. This will give you an idea of the existing skills or knowledge that you need to have and what sort of evidence you'll need to be able to supply or collect.

How do I apply for RPL?
- Enrol in the Course.
- Complete the RPL Guide (at the bottom of the page).
- Gather any applicable documents as evidence of your prior learning.
- Send it to LTi for assessing.
